Biography
Having studied and drawn the two-dimensional figure for most of his life, Grant Strawcutter, always knew that the 3-D aspect of sculpting was his greatest strength. He sees the human figure is an endlessly varying subject. He knows that within the complexity of the human form there are similarities but it is within the differences that make us most unique. Grant is inspired by the diversity of the human physique at rest and in motion, in aging and in youth.
When beginning a clay portrait, Grant enjoys getting acquainted with the subject. His intention is to capture a portion of the subject's unique personality and not merely a likeness for a successful portrait. For Grant the challenge lies in, "capturing the changing body landscape of what I see and experience; not just what I know."
In his previous career Grant served as co-founder and design director for a company known today as Soft Play Inc., the world leader in playground innovation. In 1991 Grant and his partner were awarded the prestigious Entrepreneur of the Year Award. SPI allowed Grant the opportunity to travel throughout the United States, as well as much of Europe and Asia. Grant decided to sell SPI in 1996 to pursue his dream full time of being an artist. Grant left his Charlotte, NC home and moved to London where he was inspired by some of the most incredible art in the world. He was able to spend time in the best museums in Europe absorbing the works of the great masters. Grant has settled in the warm climate of South Florida but still travels the globe when not at work in his studio.
Grant has had the opportunity to observe and study under some of today's best contemporary masters such as Tony Ryder (2002), Nilda Comas (2006&07), Paul Lucchesi (2006), Eugene Daub (2004&05), Peter Rubino (2004&05), and Richard MacDonald (2005&07). In addition, Grant was awarded his Bachelor of Arts degree in Architecture from the University of North Carolina (1979).
For inquires on any of his pieces or for further information, Grant has resided in Asheville, North Carolina since 2010 and can be contacted at grant@grantstrawcutter.com.
